If Ambrosie can make a good deal with the NFL network it could happen. That's probably on the upper end of what we could hope for but it's not out of the question. Here's hoping!

This happens in a lot of sports. A player has a HUGE breakout year and then by his production is worth 3 or 4 times, or more, what his contract is worth. Generally when that happens the guy's contract is reworked. In this case, however, if promises were made to him that he would be released to pursue NFL options then those promises need to be kept. That's the bottom line here.

I wonder if there's a way that the CFL and CFLPA could come to an agreement on this point now, ahead of the main contract talks? If we went back to the old rule it would protect the Argos in this situation as well. The Argos could re-sign Wilder to a new 2 year contract worth, just as a placeholder, $150k. BUT the new contract would contain the NFL option year clause with the bonus provision, so Wilder would get his money this year, and if there was an NFL team willing to give him say a $50k or $75k signing bonus next year then he could go to the NFL, but if not or if he got cut then his rights would still belong to Toronto for another year, which would give them an opportunity to re-sign him again.

Doubling the league's revenue? seriously? how do you do that?
Since it's a gate driven league that would mean almost a doubling in attendance which would only possible in Toronto and maybe Vancouver.
No chance of an increase in the TV contract, that's locked in until 2022.
How about a salary cut and a cut in the number of coaches and players.
Doubling of revenues is impossible..............

I hope Ambrosie is successful in doubling the league's revenue, and that collective bargaining then gets the cap to $10m, with a higher min for U.S. players. Then go back to a short "NFL window" for those in their option years (including intro contracts). Meantime, pay him circa $125 for one year (or perhaps $100 - $135 with performance incentives).

I guess you did not read the article. Popp said no raise without adding duration. Why would they?

This is another Chris Williams type situation. Player sends for small dollars as he needs a place to showcase his skills. Plays brilliantly and now has NFL offers but his contract is locking him in to play for peanuts at $56,000 and be away from home.

The Argos should do one of two things:

1. Let him go as who wants someone on your team that doesn't want to be there OR who is fine with being there but is really stressing over not making money and risking injury.

2. Make him an offer that fits his skill and contribution level based on how he played when given a chance.

For all those screaming - he had a contract - how many of you would be pissed if you had a chance for big bucks and your employer blocked you from leaving.

The one year plus option was set in place for continuity both for the player and the league years ago so guys would be here and gone and teams suffered from it. I feel for the wilder but if he gets to bolt south 1/2 way through a contract then that opens the door and the league becomes transient again. Bottom line is money. If more Canadians supported their game there would be more money for everyone.

LOL - 34k to get your head smashed in. No thanks. I'd do the same thing, contract or not. CFL needs to jack the cap up or use a "franchise tag" type system to keep its best young players around. Maybe each team can "franchise" 3 players per team - salaries don't count against the cap but players must be on their first contract. Just a thought
