Ricky Ray providing Argos with an answer before free agency

The Argos know when Ricky Ray will make a decision about his football future.

“He’s going to give us an answer before free agency starts,’’ Argos general manager Jim Popp told the Toronto Sun. “We’ve had good dialogue, not just with me, but he’s had his talks with coach (Marc) Trestman, coach (Marcus) Brady, but there’s been no pressure in terms of us saying: ‘What are you going to do?’ That’s been ongoing.”

Free agency opens on February 13.

Ray enjoyed a resurgent 2017 campaign, registering his first 5,000-yard passing season since 2008. That earned Ray the East Division’s outstanding player nomination, finishing second to eventual winner Mike Reilly of the Edmonton Eskimos, the league’s passing leader. The 38-year-old finished the Grey Cup with 19-of-32 passing for 297 yards with a touchdown in the Argos victory. That gave him four CFL titles, the most ever for a starting quarterback.

Toronto already has a contingency plan in place at quarterback, trading and then signing James Franklin to a two-year contract.

Being proactive benefits the Argos and doesn’t affect Ray either as the double blue wait patiently.
