TYLER — The larger-than-life story of Heisman Trophy-winning Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel is a roller-coaster ride that defies belief — until you get to know the rest of the Manziel family.
Years before Johnny Football, there was the Syrian Kid, an oil fortune and family members accused of crimes.
Manziel's great-grandfather, Bobby Joe Manziel, was a bantamweight boxer born in Lebanon who sparred and became friends with heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey.
RELATED: Manziel's ex-girlfriend says he repeatedly struck her during fight
Manziel retired from boxing and moved to East Texas in the 1930s to try his luck in the oil fields as a wildcatter. Almost broke, Manziel asked Dempsey for $400 to drill for oil on the grounds of the Negro New Hope Baptist Church in Gladewater.
The well was a gusher. Dempsey later said that $400 gamble was the smartest investment he ever made.

While Ambrosie has nothing but good intentions I worry about his methods and ends.
He is rushing through things without thought. From taking away a challenge (and possibly costing Calgary a cup as a result) to adding an additional bye/ paddless practices. Trying to harbor Manziel into the CFL is a bad idea. It makes the league look desperate.

Of most urgent concern is his meeting coming up with Bridge. Why would anyone in his right mind do this? He is setting himself up for scrutiny. He's either going to set a policy that only helps sask in the immediate or he's going to boost Bridge's leverage in contract negotiations.

I'm sure that they are as excited about him playing up here as they were when Lawrence Phillips and Art Schlichter had their tour of duty in the CFL. The signing may get attention at first but would soon turn into laughter and ridicule. Not a good way to promote the league.

Hear hear.

Some of the "no names" that are signed around this time of year actually have some pretty interesting backgrounds. I'd rather hear about that than what a good dude Manziel is supposed to be now.

The only people talking about Manziel is the sports media including 3 Down Nation. Time to start discussing and promoting the real prospects that have been signed by CFL teams and also current players in the system that are developing. Any one of these guys have the capability to become "the best player ever" as well. Even if they don't, unlike Manziel, they can become excellent leaders and role models (see Glenn, Lulay, Thick Nik Lewis, etc). This guy is a chump.
