Illness forces cancellation of Concordia, Universite de Montreal football game

A university football game between the Concordia Stingers (4-4) and the Montreal Carabins (7-1) has been cancelled after a bout of gastroenteritis spread through the Carabins locker room.

Late Wednesday, the two football teams and the RSEQ announced the game was cancelled for public health reasons and would not be made up at a later date.

The Universite de Montreal club says in a statement that since Wednesday morning, a large number of players and coaches from the Carabins roster have been struck with a virulent strain of the virus.

The team said the spread was severe and rapid and there was too much risk involved for opponents and fans at CEPSUM stadium.

The Carabins football team is in quarantine for 48 hours and the club’s equipment and locker room is being decontaminated.

While the Carabins had proposed postponing the match, they said that request wasn’t accepted.

It says the RSEQ, the body that oversees the conference, college and university football in Quebec, will announce an impact on the standings shortly.
