Damon Allen personally has been a guiding hand to Bridge, helping him overcome the stigma of being a “Canadian” quarterback.
Allen faced bias of a different sort at Cal State-Fullerton in the 1980s. Despite Heisman Trophy candidate credentials, he signed with the Edmonton Eskimos as a free agent after being shunned by the NFL. Black, athletic quarterbacks were not in vogue, back in the day.
Bridge is well aware of the bias against Canadian QBs in the CFL, where they operate as second-class citizens (for the most part). “An American quarterback is allowed to make mistakes and learn from them,” says former CFL quarterback Frank Cosentino. “Coaches look at a Canadian kid and say, ‘I don’t want to waste my time.’ It’s probably an unintentional bias.”
Bridge, from Mississauga, Ont., became the first Canadian quarterback to play for the Alouettes in 30 years when he was pressed into service in 2015 because of injuries.
