This here is the most head-shaking thing about the whole situation, too. One of the most vocal members of the TSN crew is Dunnigan, who is living the rest of his life with daily headaches and dizzy spells because of injuries he sustained playing football.

It also makes me cringe to see the Buck Pierce Intact Insurance commercials, because they are making light of a particularly questionable hit on that very same quarterback – who, we might remember, ALSO retired early thanks to head injuries sustained exactly that way.

No, we call them dirty because they are dirty. There is clean, hard-hitting tackles that can result in injury as well, but they are clean because they are done using the proper, safe, disciplined techniques that DBs are supposed to be trained to use. Tackling with shoulders to mid-section or wrapping around players with arms. Pushing, bumping – these are all clean.

In just these two examples, we have a deliberate clothesline at full speed (that ultimately led to the early exit of one of the best Canadian running backs the league has ever seen), and a deliberate lowering of the helmet to contact the head of a running quarterback.

These are dirty because of the action of the DB, not because of the result of the hit. The difference may be subtle to some fans, but it is a difference nonetheless.
