Justin Cox still facing domestic violence charges in U.S.

Justin Cox’s legal troubles aren’t over yet.

Despite his acquittal on assault charges related to an alleged incident of domestic violence in a Regina courtroom earlier this week, the former Saskatchewan Roughrider is still facing criminal charges in the United States over another alleged domestic violence incident.

On July 20, 2015, Cox was charged with aggravated assault, domestic violence and burglary in Starkville, Mississippi and court records indicate that he is to go to trial on those charges on July 31, 2017. The incident led him to be released by the Kansas City Chiefs.

The arrest was Cox’s second in an eighth month period. In January 2015, Cox pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of trespassing and was fined $600. A domestic violence charge was dismissed at the victim’s request.

The Riders originally signed Cox last May, then inked him to a two-year extension with the Roughriders in December after he recorded 42 defensive tackles and four interceptions in 15 games in 2016, en route to being named the team’s most outstanding rookie.

Cox was arrested in April and charged with assault causing bodily harm stemming from an alleged incident of domestic violence. The team released him the following day and Commissioner Jeffery Orridge announced that the league would not register the contract if Cox was signed by another team.

The league announced Tuesday that it planned to keep the ban in place.
