B.C. Lions sign former Argo kicker Swayze Waters

American kicker Swayze Waters has signed with the B.C. Lions.

Waters spent four seasons as a kicker and punter in Toronto before signing as a punter with the NFL’s Carolina Panthers last off-season but was released in August.

Waters earned a Grey Cup ring with Toronto in 2012. He was the CFL’s top special teams player in 2014 when he averaged 47.7 yards per punt and connected on 47 of 52 field goals but missed most of the 2015 season with a hip injury.

The Lions released Richie Leone, who handled the kicking duties for much of last season, in January so he could pursue his NFL options. Leone was a CFL West Division all-star the last two seasons and led the league with a 49.3-yard punt average in 2016. B.C. also has Paul McCallum on the roster – he’s 47 – after adding him late last year.
