A day after being cut by Bombers, Shologan signs in Montreal (and why they did it)

Keith Shologan sure wasn’t unemployed for long.

The Canadian defensive tackle signed a two-year deal with the Montreal Alouettes just one day after being released by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Shologan made 22 tackles and added two sacks in 18 games with the Bombers in 2016. He’s played nine CFL seasons with Saskatchewan, Calgary and Winnipeg amassing 190 tackles and 25 sacks in 140 games after being drafted by the Riders fourth overall in 2008 (he won a Cup with them in 2013.)

“We are very happy to add a player of Keith’s caliber to our defensive squad,” said Alouettes general manager Kavis Reed, who coached Shologan in Saskatchewan. “We have acquired a Canadian player which will give us even more flexibility with our ratio, all while disrupting opposing offensive lines.”

 The Alouettes played five Canadian offensive linemen for much of last season but with the release of veteran Jeff Perrett this week, Reed may be looking to make a ratio change by starting a Canadian defensive tackle – particularly with American defensive tackle Alan-Michael Cash (who started all 18 games last season) set to become a free agent on Feb. 14.
