Don Cherry pointed out on Coaches Corner at least 10 years that a simple elbow pad that used to be made from leather was now hard plastic and instead of just protecting the elbow, it was now a weapon. Crosby received one of his concussions this way. What is more important, the elbow or the brain.
There is also a new padded turf for football being developed that may help with head to turf impact. Dunnigan’s career ended with a concussion from the turf at Ivor Wynne

QBs are probably the most at risk. They are focal points to games. Sounds crazy, but have QBs wear flags. Then they don’t need to get hit.
Maybe 20 years they will actually consider this, but I know no one will any time soon…

I don’t think head injuries will ever be completely eliminated, football being a physical game, but I for one would like to see the league at least explore what the game would like if they decided to take the head out of the game: as in introducing rugby-style tackling and going back to the headgear.

The CFL could be a leader in this initiative instead they obfuscate rather than come clean and admit to what is so very obvious. Shameful really.

The science is rapidly evolving but enough is known to connect head injuries with CTE. We’ve known for years that boxers get what’s now called CTE. So why are there questions about the link?
