Canadian OL Matt Norman retires from CFL

Canadian offensive lineman Matt Norman is retiring from professional football, per sources.

A third-round pick by B.C. (22nd overall) in 2012, Norman played nine games in his rookie season. Then the team gave him permission to leave and go back to Western University and get his teacher’s certificate. The soon to be 28-year-old recently landed a full-time teaching job and that’s why he’s put down the playbook in exchange for textbooks.

Norman started 36 games for the Lions at centre in 2013 and 2014. A knee injury kept the six-foot-three, 317 pounder out of game action for the entire 2015 season.

Entering the 2016 CFL free agent period, 3DownNation ranked Norman as the top rated centre available on the open market, but teams stayed away from signing the Chateauguay, QC native due to lingering concerns about his knee issues.
